Lore & Background

The season follows Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen after her father King Viserys I Targaryen names her his heir, breaking a century-long tradition of male-only succession. This decision leads to tension within House Targaryen, as Hand of the King Otto Hightower conspires to usurp Rhaenyra by marrying his daughter Alicent to Viserys, who fathers Prince Aegon II Targaryen. The story takes place on the continent of Westeros.

Reader's Guide

House of the Dragon season 1 was ordered by HBO in October 2019, following the conclusion of Game of Thrones. Filming began in April 2021, primarily in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Portugal. The season features a large ensemble cast including Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Emma D'Arcy. Critics praised the character development, visual effects, writing, Ramin Djawadi's score, and performances, though some criticized the pacing of time jumps and dark lighting. The season won one of nine Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. Over 10 million viewers watched the premiere on its first day, the biggest audience in HBO's history. A second season was ordered in August 2022.
